Before an a-value can be set, a seed value needs to be defined. Think of it as the seed value serves as an anchor value and the a-value defines how much the solution is allowed to differ from it, so it is necessary to set the seed value first.
The graph at the bottom of the window, where one sets the a-value, shows the seed values if they were properly set.
